Teaching the Lessons

Since its opening in 1998, the Wetlands Center has developed and/or coordinated a number of exciting and award-winning educational programs. Through these activities, the Wetlands Center helps educate thousands of area students each year about wetlands and their importance. Some of the largest programs are listed below.

Wetlands Ecology Program
This program, sponsored by ExxonMobil, brings more than a thousand fifth-graders from Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District (GCCISD) to the Wetlands Center each year. While there, they tour the Learning Trail, make plaster animal tracks and more. At lunch, they head to the Baytown Nature Center for seining, birdwatching and other activities.

Making Science Make Sense
This program is part of the Wetlands Ecology Program and is sponsored by Bayer. Through it, students learn to use the microscopes in the science lab to examine the microscopic animals that live in wetlands. They also get to take a close up look at a variety of objects, such as the scales of a butterfly wing.

Summer Science Camp

This week-long science camp is conducted eight times each summer. Camps are offered that cover a variety of themes, such as fishing, birding, nature art and water use. Students entering grades 6-10 (ages 11-15) are eligible to attend. The camps are sponsored by Chevron Phillips.

Boater Safety Program
The United States Power Squadron, a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts, presents a Boater Safety Program at the Wetlands Center at several times throughout the year. The program meets the Texas Parks and Wildlife boater education requirements and also qualifies boat owners for discounts with many underwriters on marine insurance. Instruction is given in six sessions that teach basic seamanship, line handling, navigation, safety standards and more.
To find out when the next class will be held, call instructor Charles Cody at  281-424-7060. To find classes in other local areas, visit http://www.3ni.com/GBPS.htm

Hunter Education
The Wetlands Center is proud to offer a place for the public to attend the Hunter Education Program presented by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The course provides the opportunity for hunters to remain current on hunting laws; to sharpen hunting skills and practices by focusing on safety, responsibility and ethics; and to interact with other hunters in the area.

To find out more, or to register for a class, call instructor Walter E. Norton at 281-427-2144 or the Wetlands Center at 281-420-7128. To find classes in other local areas, visit Texas Parks & Wildlife.
