Spreading the Word

As part of the effort to make the public more aware of the Wetlands Center and its activities, staff members conduct or participate in a variety of special events. This includes staffing booths at environmentally-themed festivals or meetings. On a larger scale, it means working with groups such as the Galveston Bay Foundation to plant cordgrass during their Marsh Mania event. And of course, there’s the City of Baytown’s Annual Trash Off, which often focuses on the city’s local waterways.

Trash Off
This spring cleanup aims to get local residents and groups out in force to clean up trash around the city. Many of the locations are centered around waterways, such as Goose Creek, for a big reason. When it rains, litter and debris is washed down sloping land, storm drains or ditches and into the waterways. It often ends up in the water or entangled along the banks. The Baytown Nature Center is always a busy site during Trash Off. For more details on how to participate, call the City of Baytown at (281) 420-6597.

Marsh Mania
This annual program, sponsored by the Galveston Bay Foundation, aims to create and restore valuable marsh land in the Galveston Bay watershed. In 2003, the City of Baytown Parks and Recreation Department joined the fun, and planted several areas of marsh in Baytown, both at the Baytown Nature Center and near the Wetlands Center.

Booths & Exhibits
Each year, the Wetlands Center exhibits its wares at local events in an effort to draw attention to its mission. Look for their booths at events such as Galveston Bay Foundation’s Bay Day or Jesse Jones Park’s Nature Festival.
